Artist's Description

2005
Framed oil on hemp.
For a short time I worked at a gift and flower shop in Hanover, NH. I very much needed funds for my artwork- materials and framing. One of my responsibilities was to care for the plants in the front sales room. It was a part of that job that I enjoyed immensely. I began a series of paintings (6) that were essentially stenciled prints based on flower silhouettes. I also developed a cartouche signature- a line of simplified forms based on my initials BD. I think the concept of using a stencil came from my Mother, as she studied stenciling as a craft while raising her seven children. The choice of hemp (with a robust and prominent texture) as a support was a reference to my undergraduate work in weaving. These paintings have remained in my collection and only briefly exhibited at Long River Gallery soon after they were completed.
