Artist's Description

2017
oil, oil pastel, oil pencil on linen, framed.
This painting started as a mono print using the pigments left on my palette at the end of an oil painting session. After the initial print was dry I added oil pigments, oil pastels, and oil pencil marks, following the organic forms to define and enrich them. I connected the darks and harmonized the palette. As I worked, I recognized a strong contrast of values developing. I decided to use that to emphasize the concept of looking through a garden landscape backlit by strong sunlight- contre-jour (against the day).
