Artist Notes: “Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that's triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.
Most people who go through traumatic events may have temporary difficulty adjusting and coping, but with time and good self-care, they usually get better. If the symptoms get worse, last for months or even years, and interfere with your day-to-day functioning, you may have PTSD.
Getting effective treatment after PTSD symptoms develop can be critical to reduce symptoms and improve function.”
On November 4, 2016 I witnessed an automobile accident involving my neighbor when walking home from voting in the presidential election. My husband recognized I was exhibiting the symptoms of shock and insisted on prompt medical care. My mind went back and forth between flash backs of the accident to the complete surprise and dismay of the election results. There seemed to be no safe place for it to rest.
Everyone, including family, friends and medical professional gave me advice about the importance of returning to the studio and to painting and to visiting my neighbor as she slowly recovered from terrible physical injury. The artwork produced responded to the political distress and the result was a quickly done abstract painting titled Taking Back Orange. Over time it became a tryptic. And then another tryptic titled Humpty Dumpty was started. These paintings came from hurting and as I have healed I put them aside unfinished. The recent terrorist events involving vehicles killing and injuring pedestrians brings back November 4 to me. Despite the flashbacks, I know I am OK, but my heart goes out to all who witnessed these traumatic events and not only to the victims. As for me, it’s time for me to finish this series and then move on. To start, I changed the title to reflect a more positive less grab strike back attitude, from Taking Back Orange to Me and My Orange. The truth is, orange is beautiful. As for Humpty Dumpty, we will see. Available individually.
