I continue to use a combination of scumbling and glazing to create misty and poetic images. However, I am using the catenary (the curve that an idealized hanging chain or cable assumes under its own weight when supported only at its ends) as the structure in these compositions. Into and onto that mathematic structure I inject a particular element of natural abstraction and form created by energy- particularly atmospheric and organic forms. I want to explore my relationship to science and my own creative energy.
For this particular series I decided to start with vertical stripes using the Fibonacci (the first two numbers in the Fibonacci sequence are 0 and 1,and each subsequent number is the sum of the previous two.) numbers of 5, 8, and 13 to determine their width. I then added the catenary curve to the equation. Fibonacci numbers are seen repeatedly in natural forms. I wanted to see if they could be useful in my abstract compositions.
